About Us

Wahkiakum County Fire District #1, also known as Puget Island Fire Department, is an all volunteer department serving Puget Island, Washington.

Located in the Columbia River roughly 38 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean and adjacent to the town of Cathlamet, Puget Island covers 7.5 square miles and is home to approximately 850 people.

With the exception of our Sheriff's Deputies, all emergency responders in Wahkiakum County are volunteers, which means they don't get paid for what they do. If a call comes in for a fire or a medical emergency on Puget Island, the people responding to the call will be your neighbors and friends, all volunteering their time to provide the assistance you need.
